Croatia won a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Morocco on Saturday to finish third at the World Cup in Qatar.
Defender Josko Gvardiol, one of the tournament’s standout performers, scored a header on seven minutes to give Croatia an early lead, but Morocco responded shortly after with a close-range header from defender Achraf Dari, his first international goal.
Morocco is the only African team to have reached this stage of the World Cup, but they were relegated to fourth place after Croatia winger Mislav Orsic scored a superb curled effort on 42 minutes that proved to be the winner.
Croatia finished runners-up in Russia four years ago and had hoped to make an unlikely return to the final in Qatar, but their tournament ended on Tuesday with a 3-0 semifinal loss to Argentina.
Croatia previously finished third in their first-ever World Cup appearance in 1998.
