In January 2022, the 21-year-old Mason Greenwood was arrested in connection with allegations involving images and videos.
Later, he was accused of trying to rape a woman, acting in a controlling and coercive manner, and assault resulting in actual bodily harm.
Greenwood expressed his relief in a statement, thanking his family and friends for their support.
According to the Crown Prosecution Service, the charges were dropped after key witnesses backed out of the case.
We have a responsibility to keep cases under constant review, a spokesman said.
“In this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction. We have a duty to stop the case in these circumstances.
“We have informed all parties of our decision.
“We will always support any potential victims coming forward and reporting to the police, and we will prosecute wherever our legal standard is met.”
“I am relieved that this matter is now over and I would like to thank my family, loved ones, and friends for their support,” said Greenwood, 21, in a statement issued on his behalf.
“At this time, no additional comment will be made.”
The Manchester United forward, who has played one game for England, was suspended from participating in team activities within hours of the allegations becoming public at the start of 2022.
A representative for Manchester United stated that the organisation had taken note of “the Crown Prosecution Service’s decision that all charges against Mason Greenwood have been dropped.”
Before deciding on the next course of action, the club will now conduct its own process, they said.
“Until that process is finished, we won’t make any further comments.”
According to the BBC, Greenwood won’t start practising or playing again until this procedure is finished.
It was “only fair,” according to Greater Manchester Police, to announce that Greenwood would no longer be subject to legal action.
According to Ch Supt Michaela Kerr, the choice had “not been made lightly.”
However, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate the force’s commitment to looking into claims of violence against women and girls and providing support to those affected, regardless of their circumstances, during what can be a trying and upsetting time for them.
