The Ministry of Youth and Sports, in collaboration with the Ghana Embassy in Qatar, has successfully mobilized over 1,000 Ghanaians and Africans residing in Qatar to support the Black Stars at the ongoing FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.
The move is a fulfillment of a plan announced by Minister of Youth Sports Mustapha Ussif in Parliament prior to the start of the tournament.
The innovative fan mobilization strategy is the result of the government’s inability to fund Ghanaian supporters as a result of the country’s economic difficulties.
To supplement the few fans for whom the Ministry intended to facilitate their trip to Qatar through corporate support, the Minister stated that his Ministry was mobilizing Ghanaians and Africans to show strong support for the Black Stars.
The Ministry and the Ghana mission mobilized over 1,000 Ghanaians and some Africans ahead of Ghana’s first group match on Tuesday, providing them with match tickets and Ghanaian-themed apparel.
As the Black Stars battled to a 3-2 loss to Portugal last Thursday, the mobilized fans and the few Ghanaians provided an energetic and colorful backdrop.
Mr Ussif, accompanied by the Ghana Ambassador to Qatar, met with supporters and thanked them for coming out to support the Black Stars.
The mobilization effort will be continued in upcoming games against South Korea on Monday and Uruguay on December 2, 2022.
