On Tuesday, December 27, 2022, some soldiers on guard at the Bank of Ghana (BoG) premises in Takoradi, Western Region, allegedly brutalized some innocent members of a masquerade group who were parading through the city’s streets.
According to the victim, Roberta Monkah, who told Empire News’ Kwame Malcolm about the incident, she was left with wounds under her right eye as a result of the assault.
“We were in a procession when someone lit firecrackers and ran back to my fiancée and me. Three Bank of Ghana soldiers approached us out of nowhere and began assaulting my fiancée. So it was there that I told them he wasn’t the one who lit it. “But then, out of nowhere, a soldier kicked me from behind, and I fell, and he hit my lower eye with the butt of his gun, leaving blood gushing out,” she explained.
As a result, she was transported to the Ghana Ports and Harbours Hospital in Takoradi for medical treatment.
She did, however, add that after filing a complaint at the Takoradi Central Police Station, she was asked to bring a doctor’s report, which she has yet to obtain for a fee of GHc500.
Various masquerade groups parade and dance to brass band music on the streets of the Sekondi Takoradi metropolis during the Christmas season.
Takoradi has earned the title of most popular Christmas destination.
